Dojo is a sample based synth developed for Native Instruments Kontakt. It is inspired by the principles of Japanese martial arts, which are translated and applied to creative sound design.
Dojo features 2 main instruments: the Kumite synth and the Kata synth.
The Kumite synth is inspired to the concept of fighting an opponent in karate; it is characterized by an aggressive sound, based on mangled analog synths, spectral re-synthesis of organic sources, orchestral phrases, tempo-synced rhythms, plucks, deep cinematic impacts and percussions, textures and horns.
The Kumite synth is based on a custom-scripted modulation engine to create punchy phrases, hybrid orchestral cues, pulses, dreamy arpeggios and deep underscore movements.
The Kata synth is inspired to the concept of “pattern of movements” in karate. We have recorded cello, double bass, viola, violin, crystal baschet, orchestral woodwinds, metallophones, piano and keys, jetè and staccatos, designed organic sounds and much else. All of them can be morphed, filtered, distorted and animated via an XY pad, to create evocative melodies, evolving atmospheres, detailed textures and underscore sequences.
Both the Kumite and the Kata synth in Dojo feature a separate instrument for sample import via an intuitive drag and drop on the GUI, where you can process your own samples within the core engines of the main instruments.
The Kumite and the Kata synth feature a total of 420+ snapshots.
Dojo is for TV, film, game composers, sound designers and music producers looking for an innovative, complete instrument to write cues in a straightforward and creative way. It fits particularly well the action and thriller cinematic genres, but its versatility makes it useful also for horror, electronic and ambient music.

Kumite Synth
The Kumite synth in Dojo is based on 3 sound sources : the first two (Synth 1 and Synth 2) are based on a variety of synthetic sounds, organised in Analog, Dark, Distorted, FM, Granular, Organic and Vocal. The third (Sample) is organised in Textures, Strings, Rhythms, Impacts and Horns, for a total of 154 sounds. It features 180+ snapshots organised in Synth Cues, Cello Cues, Underscore, Pluck and Arpeggios.
The Kumite synth features a core modulation engine, based on a drawable wavetable LFO with multirate and multidepth capabilities; it also offers modulation functionalities for the Synth Morph, Synth Cutoff, Sample Volume and Sample degrade, which can be either modulated internally or in your host DAW.
The Kumite synth offers deep sound design capabilities, and allows to easily create phrases and hybrid cues by blending the synthetic and organic layers.
Kata Synth
The Kata synth in Dojo features 4 sound sources : Layer 1 -2 and Keys 1-2.
Layers 1-2 feature Cello, Double Bass, Violin, Viola, Crystal Baschet, Metallophones, Orchestral Woodwinds (Tuba, Trombone and sound designed winds), Voices, Atmospheres and Drones.
Keys 1-2 feature Metallophones (Glocks, Xylophone, designed Melody Box and Carillon), Piano and designed Keys, Plucks (Guitar and Zither) jetè and staccato from orchestral strings.
All said sounds can be combined, morphed and processed via a fully mappable and customisable XY Pad, where you can assign a variety of parameters to the X-Y axis of the pad. It is possible to set the range and the direction of the controlled parameters along the axis; the cursor of the XY Pad can be either assigned via MIDI or controlled in your host DAW.
The Kata synth in Dojo features 220+ snapshots organised in Strings, Woodwinds, Keys, Pads and Textures, Sequences and Plucks.
Import your own samples
Dojo features a sample import version for both the Kumite synth and the Kata synth.
Here you can drag and drop your samples on the GUI of the instruments and process them by using the same core engines of the main ones.
Spectral Resynthesis in Kyma (Symbolic Sound)
The samples in DOJO feature an intensive and meticulous use of spectral resynthesis in Kyma (Pacarana outboard unit), a sound design programming environment used in many Hollywood scoring and sound production, and considered “the Holy Grail of sound design“.
Many of the sounds in Dojo are the result of this kind of process: a sample is analysed in Kyma and the resulting spectrum is used as “reference” in a modal filter. The filter is then excited with a variety of sources (white noise, found sound etc) and the resulting sound is played manually via an Haken Continuum Fingerboard, where spectral parameters (bandwidth, time index) are mapped to the Continuum surface.
The result can be described as the sound of an “invented instrument”, sitting on the fence between realism and surrealism, and can produce both tonal, “musical” results (the Metallophones, Keys and part of the Strings in the Kata Synth) or more “noisey” sounds , like part of the source sounds in Kumite synth. Some of the cello sounds in Kumite come by experimenting with the spectrum of an electric grater!
Here’s a Crystal Baschet that has been massively sampled in Dojo, and used both conventionally (recordings of the original instrument) as a spectral reference to create new timbres.
After downloading and extracting Dojo, please follow the instructions below.
-
- Download and extract the Dojo Snapshots.zip file.
- The whole extracted folder Dojo Snapshots contains the subfolders 01_Kumite Synth and 02_Kata Synth: copy them (not the whole Dojo Snapshots folder) to the Kontakt snapshots folder. Depending on your computer OS (Mac or Windows), you can find the Kontakt Snapshots folder by following the file- path below:Mac OS: System Drive/Users/<your username>/Documents/Native Instruments/UserContent/ Kontakt/
Windows: C:\Users\<your username>\Documents\Native Instruments\User Content\Kontakt\ Once done, you will be able to see and use the snapshots in the Dojo instrument -
If you experience issues with the snapshots after the installation described above, both in Kontakt 6 as in Kontakt 7, please follow this short tutorial to fix the problem:
-

Notice for Kontakt 7 users: the Dojo snapshots WON'T show-up in new Kontakt 7 browser. You still need to use/create the aforementioned file path and load the snapshots from the snapshots menu within the Dojo Kontakt instrument.
